Live LAGOM | Resoloutions*

I am lucky enough to say I am part of Ikea's Live Lagom project. To live lagom it means to live more sustainably but still have the little luxuries in life. Now, we all could do with living a bit more sustainable. I have two things I want to work on over the next year with the help from Ikea. I want to have less waste with food and reduce the electricity I use.

Since moving out things I struggle with is the shelf life of food and I'm just throwing away so much. There is a few things I'm going to be doing to help myself reduce waste.

Three things for less food waste:

  1. Freeze! - Okay, so I do mean literally. Freezing food is properly one of the best ways to reduce waste. If you have some food that is about to go off put it in the freezer it will add weeks if not months to the shelf life. So stock up on freezer bags and tupperware!
  2. Plan your meals - If you plan what you are going to have for the week and write a shopping list accordingly that matches up you won't over buy. There have been plenty of times I've gone to the shop and randomly brought loads of stuff that don't even go together as a meal.
  3. Leftovers - Leftovers are perfect for lunch at work the next day or maybe adding them into a recipe. Left over chicken and veg? Make a pie!

I also want to work on reducing my electricity, again since moving out I've seen my usage go up each month from Eon and it costs more money. Money I could be spending on clothes and shoes! I charge my phone through the night all the time, so I've got a timer plug so it turns off through the night when it's fully charged. You just waste the rest of the night using energy you don't need and probably ruining your battery life too!

Three things for using less energy:

  1. Apps - There are so many app's these days and some even help you reduce energy usage when you leave the house, I'd highly recommend looking on your app store!
  2. Lightbulbs - Even just changing the lightbulbs can save heaps of energy, Ikea have amazing ones that last years. You don't have to wait for them to come on and they are super bright!
  3. Stand by - Don't leave things on stand by, it still uses energy, energy that you are paying for. Switch it off at the plug and save some pennies for that cheeky mocha frappucino at Starbucks!

A few other things I'm going to try to do:
  • Grow some herbs and chilli's in an indoor greenhouse to save some money
  • Use a lamp instead of the ceiling light just for reading or blogging
  • Use boiling inserts to reduce the gas and water I'm using on multiple pans/hobs
  • Only fill the kettle up for the amount of water I'm using. I don't want to boil the whole kettle for one cup of tea!
Have you got any tips to live more sustainably? Let me know in the comments below!
