Why You Should Clear the Clutter Before Christmas*

In the run-up to Christmas, you undoubtedly have a million things to do, from buying presents and decorating the tree to planning for the feast you’re preparing to cook up on the big day, so I’m sure the last thing you want to do is add an extra chore to your list. However, the process of decluttering is something that you really should consider doing for a few good reasons for doing so…

Make Room for the Prezzies

If you’re anything like me, you probably have a whole lot of stuff filling up your home already, From clothing to toys and trinkets, even electronics it seems that our homes are bulging at the seams, and although a little clutter is nothing to worry about, too much can be stressful, and it will make your home seem untidy.

It makes sense then, that when you’re expecting an influx of new toys and treats, that you take stock of what you already have, donate the excess and have plenty of space left to store your new stuff without leaving your home looking like a bomb site.

Schpock, eBay and Facebook Marketplace are good places to sell the stuff you don’t want and Shiply is your best bet for sending them fast, hassle-free and most importantly, for a good price. You’ll be amazed how much better you feel when you’ve lightened your home’s load.

Teach Your Kids a Valuable Lesson

If your kids are old enough, now is the perfect time to teach them about the importance of giving. If you can explain to them that there are some children out there who don’t have any toys and that Santa will be bringing them a lot of new gifts, they’ll be more than happy to donate theirs, help some less fortunate children have a good Christmas too and learn a valuable lesson about giving and receiving and counting their blessings.

You don’t have to make them give everything away, just have them sort through their toys and donate a few things they no longer play with, look for a local charity that helps the less fortunate, and you’ll have happy kids, a less cluttered home, and you’ll have done something meaningful too. It’s a win-win situation.

It’s Easier to Keep the Place Presentable

Of course, a major benefit of decluttering ahead of Christmas is that the fewer things you have, the easier it is for you to keep the place clean and tidy up after your family. This is obviously pretty important over the festive period when you tend to have a whole lot of people coming and going and you never exactly know when an unexpected guest might pop in on you.

The Decorations Will Look Better

Last, but not least, the fewer distractions you have in the form of clutter, the better your decorations and tree will look when there is no mess to detract from them. They’ll look truly amazing!

So, although it might be difficult to fit it in, it is certainly well-worth decluttering ahead of the big day.

  1. I've been unintentionally decluttering my room and it's made me feel so much better :)
